A Harris Poll discovered the public views careers in firefighting as one of the most respectable careers, just behind doctors or scientists.” Despite how positively we feel about firefighters far too often we take them for granted. A firefighters job is extremely dangerous and complex. Firefighters need to work effectively in stressful situations. They respond to a huge variety of emergencies. At any given moment, they could find themselves in a life or death situation, protecting our families or homes. Often times they are the first to the scene of traffic accidents, where they are trained in vital medical emergency response functions. Their job duties range from saving people from burning buildings to rescuing trapped victims in car crashes. It is so important to acknowledge what they do for our community.
When the alarm sounds, firefighters must respond immediately. They are called out on weekends and holidays, they miss out on family events and anniversaries. The firefighters themselves, as well as their families, endure a tremendous emotional strain. Firefighting families can be separated for weeks or months at a time during fire season. Even still, these courageous men and women must live with the difficult experiences and emotions involved in their jobs.
Thank a firefighter the next time you see one! Take donuts, or pizza into a station. Buy them lunch as a thank you, or just stop to shake their hand and let them know how important to our community they are.
